Abstract

This article investigates the geochemical behavior of alkali (Na, K, Rb, Cs) and alkaline-earth (Ca, Sr, Ba) metals in irrigated typical sierozem soils located within the impact zone of the Kuvasay Cement Plant. Soil samples were collected from various genetic horizons and depths of soil profiles situated at distances of 100, 500, 1000, and 10000 m (background) from the plant. The contents of alkali and alkaline-earth metals were generally higher at 100-500 m compared to the background site. A tendency toward technogenic accumulation of some elements (K and Ca) was observed in the upper soil layers in areas adjacent to the plant. The distribution of Na, Rb, and Cs was found to be more strongly controlled by irrigation regime, agrotechnical practices, and the mineralogical composition of parent materials than by direct technogenic inputs.
